The Internet of Things and wearables: driving the next phase of personal computing

Session times: 12 Dec 10:00 AM (CET)

Few revolutionary technologies have created new value pools, displaced incumbents, changed lives, liquefied industries, and made a trillion dollar economic impact. That is, until the Internet of Things (IoT) sprang to life. The practice of embedding sensors and actuators along with traditional low-power Systems on Chips (SoCs) into physical objects to link them to the digital world is becoming the next big thing. In this session, we will explore this physical/digital ecosystem and look at how integrating contextual computing and cognitive science is fueling the development of connected cars, homes, and Machine to Machine (M2M) interactions in several industry verticals. IoT is stated by McKinsey* to be one of the ten disruptive technologies that will transform the way we live and work. (*Manyika, Chui, Bughin, et al. Disruptive technologies: Advances that will transform life, business, and the global economy, May 2013; McKinsey Global Institute.)
